This data was gathered through distributing the survey questionnaires to the school community, specifically teachers, students, and non-teaching staffs.
The data shows that most of the respondents are well aware about the potential geologic and hydrometeorological hazards in our school such as the earthquakes that might occur that could be a threat to the lives of people in our school, and the flood that happens in front of senior high school’s building when heavy rain occurs. Moreover, it can also be seen in the data that the respondents are informed about the school’s emergency evacuation procedures and that they have received proper training on handling potential hazards in the classroom/work place. Furthermore, it is also said by the majority that the emergency exits are clearly marked and are easily accessible to the teaching environment and work environment of the non-teaching staffs which is a good thing so that if ever disaster occurs, it would be easy for the students, teachers, and non-teaching staffs to escape and find a safer place to go to.
However, it can be seen that majority of the respondents answered that there are no regular inspections conducted to ensure the safety of electrical equipment in the school environment which should be improved to ensure the safety of the school community. Also, most of the respondents answered that they have not been provided with appropriate personal protective equipments (PPE) for specific school activities. In addition, the respondents answered that they receive updated informations about health and safety protocols from the school administration; this is a very important step in order to ensure safety of the school community because these protocols can help people avoid danger for being prepared.
Lastly, most of the respondents have already tried participating in emergency response drills such as fire drill and earthquake drill for potential hazards, and there are clear communication channels for reporting and addressing safety concerns within the school that can help people be aware in what could be that hazards we might face.
The teachers plays an important role in safeguarding the community. As they are the “second parent of students”, they are responsible in making sure that every student is prepared when disaster comes. That’s why teachers are the ones who guide students when there are safety drills happening in schools. They are the ones who make sure that the students know what to do if ever natural disasters or hazards occur. For example, teachers teach safety precautions to their students in order to ensure their safety and for them to not panic too much. Teachers have a lot of roles to play, a parent, friend, sister/brother, and of course, a teacher. Therefore, we should appreciate their efforts in sacrificing and playing these roles which are not easy to do.
